Solving Illegal Immigration?

Fresh off of Chaim's post from yesterday, DovBear has a wonderful comment thread on a post today (start about 50 comments in) about illegal immigration. In it, Nephtuli proposed a plan to which even DovBear agreed with 2.5/4 points, and then posted it. An excerpt:
1) Make it easier for legals to come into this country by restructing our visa system to let more workers into the country.
2) Crack down hard on companies that use illegal workers.
3) Make illegal immigration a felony and subject to deportation.
4) Make a grace period where all illegals can come forward without penalty. They would then have a choice. They could join a guest worker program which would penalize them (fines) and make citizenship difficult. Or they could leave and come back at the back of the line and avoid the fine, but they would not be allowed to come back for a year.
I think it really covers the problems both present and future that illegal immigration causes; what do you think?

  1. Hello there Ezzie!
I've been following your blog for a while now and I've admired you (BA"H) gorgeous baby!
I've left comments here and there but you've never visited my blog? (Be honest- do I have a hygiene problem?)

  2. In print, it looks good.

I'm worried, though, (and perhaps unjustifiably) that we're getting into something we'll regret later - when we start making companies more accountable, are we going to then drive up the prices due to wage hikes, etc?

I know that it's a horrible thought, but I just have this image that by doing this we're going to bankrupt ourselves.

That being said, though, I'd love to be able to legally take in every who's here, although we most definitely don't have the resources for that, either.

I suppose this is when it's a good thing to be a republican and heartless. :)

  3. Kasamba - I'm sorry! I don't see every comment :( especially if they're on posts that are from a couple days earlier. I'm checking out your blog as we speak. But egg liquor?! :)

Robbie - LOL. But as a Dem, you should be more concerned with the current situation than the long-term effect on Big Business, no? Heck, since we're not worrying about it, you must be to OUR right! ;)

  4. It's not businesses responsibility to control our borders - it's the government's responsibility.

We have already had several "this is absolutely, positively the LAST time" amnesties for illegals. They keep pouring in.

Now, post 9/11, people are realizing that benign neglect is dangerous. The majority no longer supports another round of amnesty - not until the borders really are brought under control.

This is also the first requirement if most of the suggestions you list are to have any teeth to them.

I agree with the recent article by Charles Krauthammer: first build fences, then consider amnesty.

It's essential to show that we are serious about controlling our borders before any further amnesty.
