J-Blog Awareness Month

To best understand what this is about... check out Life-of-Rubin's posts on his own blog and at J-Blogosphere. Basic idea: The JIBs aren't happening until around May, giving us time to get them much better organized to serve the purpose they're meant to do, which is promote Jewish and Israeli blogs.

For J-blog awareness month, I think I'm going to do what I did last year for the JIBs to some extent, which is discuss blogs by category and type. But I'll start that another day, when I've had time to split them up - until then, enjoy a hilarious post by one of the funniest blogs out there, PsychoToddler. For kicks, check out his daughter Fudge's blog, too. The humor runs in the family. And if you're really in the mood for some serious laughs, there's always Kasamba.

Please, join in J-Blog Awareness Month, and take some time to point out your favorite blogs or blogs that perhaps people haven't heard of yet. There's so much out there we haven't seen...

  1. Do you think there's any hope of heretical and liberal blogs being included, or is going to be heavily weighted to the religious and political right again? :-)

  2. In J-blog Awareness Month? Absolutely. I've got a whole category of you guys. :P

The JIBs? They're nominated by the people. It would be wonderful if people of all stripes would join in and nominate the blogs on both sides that they like. That was one thing that was lacking last year, but it's hard to fault the awards - you need nominations. On that note, DovBear and others pulled quite a bunch of awards.

By definition, the J-blogosphere leans religious: Those who are Jewish but don't identify much with Judaism tend not to be a "part" of the J-blogosphere. And as most Orthodox Jews lean right, you'll get a heavier RW-lean as well because of it. What can I say? You need to find more friends to start reading blogs! :)

Actually... one idea we had was to do like the Weblog Awards and split *some* categories up by orientation. They have separate categories for liberal and conservative - there's no reason we can't do the same.

  3. JA - Every single Jewish Blog will and can be included. We are also discussing splitting up the political and religious blogs into RW and LW and Religious and ... umm ... non religious :-)

There are a lot of benefits to doing that, the main being this will prevent the LW and RW blogs ganging up on each other for votes. If each one is in its own category (which I believe is how it works in the regular web log awards every year)

  5. Sounds good, guys. I definitely think separate categories are a good idea. That way people are voting for quality rather than for blogs on "their" side.

  6. How about categories of encouragement? Spouses We Wish Would Blog, Commenters We Wish Would Blog, Defunct Blogs We Wish Would Return, etc.?

  7. JA - Exactly.

TRN - Heh. What, do people want Serach to blog? Now THAT would be something...

  11. Another good idea is to have some categories for smaller/newer/lower-ranked blogs... like the Weblog Awards do.

  12. I Also think you should split them up some of the key issues facing Judaism today you know like applesauce or sour cream

  15. So let's start a virtual Hallmark line of greeting cards to celebrate blogger month. Then we can expand into virtual bouquets and chocolates (no fat or calories!) for the ones we love. For the reverse, there may be a market for virtual rotten tomatoes.

  16. Maybe now you've said "there's always Kasamba" it will encourage her to make "always" a reality... but I doubt it :(
