Why Elianna has 2 N's

Now that I'm getting the hang of this Performancing thing, it's really quite good... this might make doing roundups even easier. Nice. [Though of course, this didn't post the first 10 times I tried it. :::sigh:::]

4/7: Ha. I have to post this normally, because Performancing didn't work. I wrote this days ago, including the lines above, but wasn't able post it until now. That's what I get for getting excited. ARGH!!

A number of people asked why we spelled Elianna's name with 2 "N"'s, rather than one. Most people have seen both spellings, but for some reason, this is a common question.

The truth is... we were undecided as to how it should be spelled. But I came up with a brilliant (cop-out) idea, so we wouldn't have to make such a difficult decision. Serach's friend Kickboxer had posted the birth on OnlySimchas, so I called her up after the baby was named on Shabbos. Here are excerpts from the conversation:
KB: Hey, what's up?! What's the name?!

Ez: Elianna Rachel. Can you post the name on OS?

KB: Sure, how do you spell it?

Ez: Rachel is with an "A", not an "O".

KB: And Elianna? With one "N" or two?

Ez: Well, that's up to you. Whatever you decide is how her name will be spelled, forever.

KB: WHAT?! That's so unfair! One second... [discusses it with a friend who was at her house for Shabbos, who also used to work with Serach and went to college with her, and ironically used to live up the block from me in Cleveland...]

Inspired Girl: Two, for sure!

Ez: Okay, but why?

KB/IG: Well, Kickboxer's (real) name has 2 "E"'s, and InspiredGirl's (real) name has 2 "Z"'s, so Elianna gets 2 "N"'s! Plus, Ezzie has two "Z"'s. So for sure.

Ez: Good enough for me! And if she hates it in 17 years, she complains to you two. Deal?

KB/IG: Mmmkay!!
See, everything we do is done with much thought and reason.

  1. ROTFL

"Elianna" is easier for non-Hebrew speakers.
To a non-Hebrew-knowing English-speaker, it could get mis-read as "Eli-Anna". "Eliana" could potentially be read as "Eli-Ay-Na".

  2. That's true also - we thought of that one.

  3. It also looks much prettier that way. I'm sure she'll thank you for it!
