Missing the Boat

This doesn't make much sense. Hillary Clinton has canceled her plans to attend the rally outside the UN protesting Iranian President Ahmadinejad because she found out Sarah Palin was going to be there:
“Her attendance was news to us, and this was never billed to us as a partisan political event,” Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines said Wednesday. “Sen. Clinton will therefore not be attending.”
But if it was supposed to include Palin and Clinton, how was it a partisan event? It's only partisan now that Clinton has backed out - something which won't reflect well on her, and by extension, perhaps Democrats in general and Barack Obama. Then again, perhaps she's not so upset by the idea that Obama could lose.

  1. Sometimes I feel like Republicans live in a different universe. Who cares about this nonsense?

  2. They do. The section they're in is called the Milky Way.

What part shouldn't they care about? Iran? I don't think rallies do much, but since it's considered a statement and politicians go to these things, for a major Dem to back out because the GOP VP candidate is there will certainly come off as "politics over policy". Is it important? No. Is it a telling statement? It's possible.

You're being disingenuous. It would not "come off as" anything if people like you weren't turning it into an issue. Does anybody in America think that Hillary "backed out" because she likes Ahmedijad? If not, who are you talking about? And if so, don't you feel dirty encouraging them?

  4. Huh?! Yes - nothing is an issue unless people care. She's backing out because the GOP will be there and she can't be seen with them, despite the importance of protesting Ahmadenijad. That sounds like protesting him is secondary to not being seen with Palin. Nobody is making a non-issue into an issue; this is the statement she's making.

If the GOP equivalent would back out of an event on (say) global warming because Biden was going to be there, what would the outcry from the left be?
