As a follow-up to the discussion about eating disorders and self-image a couple weeks ago, I was just informed of a new documentary that has been filmed showcasing girls in an eating disorders clinic and their struggle with weight and self-esteem, filmed by Lauren Greenfield.
Check it out.
No THIN problem here :)

ReplyDeleteOH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS.
ReplyDeleteHORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE.
you know, when we were in h.s. we sort of knew it was pathetic to be anorexic but we NEVER thought it to be ANYTHING like that. Some of my friends *wished* they would have the "self control" to be anorexic. HORRIBLE
Thank you, thank you for the link.
ReplyDeletei know this is old(ish) - (hey, that rhymes with goldish!) , but i feel like commenting now. Today in education class we got onto the topic of depression, which led to eating disorders and cutting. It was a room of about 25 post-sem bais yaakov graduates and one frum, older middle-aged male professor. maybe i'm judgemental, but it looked to me like a lot of people got very fidgety during that discussion. i came up with 2 possible reasons: a)they have had some sort of involvement, either personally or through a friend or relative, with one of the mentioned illnesses, and have not understood it to the point that they are comfortable speaking or thinking about it. or b) the bais yaakov system often refuses to address this type of issue, and girls learn from that to push all issues under the rug rather than face them.
ReplyDeletelike i said, maybe i'm too negative. Or maybe i'm really on to something.
PN - I'm going with (b). To some extent, I'm still that way about it (though as you can see, I'm much better now). It's new to some of us to be discussing "that stuff".
