Slippery Slope? End-Around?

Anonymous had a fascinating comment on the post below, which linked to SJ's post regarding gender "choice" that may be starting in New York. Basically, if a person chose to be the other gender and followed through on this for two years, they could "become" the other gender. (Yeah, exactly.) Anonymous noted:
dont know if you realize but this is going to be the way that the liberals up in NY will be able to legalize gay marriage, all one "partner" needs to do i s act like the opposite gender for 2 years and they will be a the other sex.

slippery slope indeed!
That's fascinating, and seems to be logical. If a male "became" female, they could then theoretically marry a(nother) male, with no problem whatsoever. It's a very cute way around current laws.

Side note on the gender issue:
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority also agreed last month to let people define their own gender when deciding whether to use the men’s or women’s bathrooms.
I think this will lead to a whole lot of perverts going into the wrong bathroom and then claiming they're of the other gender. Wonderful.

  1. note to self: when in NY, avoid public restrooms.

  2. Are you completely ignoring the part about where you need statements from a doctor and a mental health professional? What is it about sexuality that makes all the right wingers go completely out of their minds? What's going to happen if a male-to-female transgendered person goes into a women's restroom? Is the world going to end?

If the Rabbis in the Talmud can make rulings on androgynous people and hermaphrodites, why can't our society make rulings about transgendered people?

Wait, I know. Shira Schmidt told me that God destroyed the world because of this sort of thing. Because nothing pisses God off more than the laws of New York. Please.

Whatever happened to live and let live? Have some compassion for people with gender issues. How does it hurt anybody?

  3. JA - What stops a single doctor or mental health professional with an agenda from doing as they see fit?

More to the point, don't you realize how utterly stupid this is?

This has nothing to do with androgynous and hermaphrodites. This is about regular males and females.

Obviously, if that became a problem, there would need to be some sort of review board.

People have gender dysphoria. What's your solution? Pretend they don't exist? Force them to act like a gender they don't identify with?

How is it more stupid than forcing a biological man who lives as a woman to use the men's room?

This has nothing to do with androgynous and hermaphrodites. This is about regular males and females.

How do you figure? Are you really taking the gender-dysphorics-don't-exist route? Seems like it would be pretty easy to disprove that.

  5. Of course, since homosexuality does not automatically equel transgenderism, this is very much a false argument.

Most homosexuals wouldn't be interested in becoming the other genders.

Transgenderism generally has nothing to do with what sex you're attracted to, to boot. By way of example, I know of several cases where post-op transexuals continue dating members of their now-current gender.

  6. Gender dysphoria sounds to me like an issue that would require professional help. I can understand how it would be very difficult to be forced to act masculine when you don't feel like it, but just using the same restroom with other men seems trivial. A guy who feels uncomfortable could certainly go in a stall and sit down, if he wants to act feminine in that way.

And as a modest woman, finding a man in the ladies room would FREAK me out and cause me to feel very unsafe. Even if he were dressed as a woman. I wouldn't be too keen on a woman dressed as a man either, because maybe he/she is trying to be hormonally male. The way this issue is developing, it seems the only solution would be single restrooms, or floor-to-ceiling stalls with doors & lockable knobs like a normal room.
