Sketchy is an extremely overused term. There are many girls in Stern who will label any guy sketchy if he so much as shows up in the Brookdale lobby or (gasp!) holds a door open for them. After all, he clearly wants to get some.
When someone (not mentioning any names) (Shmez and Fiji) pretend to work late every day, go in Saturday nights and Sundays, but are really getting pedicures and taking yoga classes.
Why are you so worried about it? It's really no big deal. Everything will be fine...I'll take care of it...it's not important.
Hold on...sorry, I have to take this call...who is it?...just some guy about something that I have to take care of later with some people over there. You know...thatthingwiththeguyattheplace...later.
jersey - u are so right. that is 100% how stern girls use the term.
~sarah~ - i have heard how some australians use the term "dodgy". I don't think they are interchangeable in all cases. But I love the word dodgy :) Especially with the accent.
As for my definition of sketchy - my old roomate who claimed she was 100% shomer with her chosson but felt the need to lock the door to watch a movie with him in her room. on her bed. i'm sorry, but that's sketchy.
Diana - Have you ever met Ezzie? Yoga???? Pedicures?? Seriously? Just to give u an idea here - Ezzie has recently been nominated for the 24th consecutive year for the undefeated title of "Laziest Person in the World Award".
Fiji - you don't think that the idea of Ezzie doing yoga is the funniest thing in the history of the world. Seriously though - you guys saying you are working late while really you are either checking sport scores or shopping online.
sketchy means a person who say/acts something to other person but really wants something eles. For example (true story). In my shul, we were looking for new rabbis. my father is gabbi and part of rabbi search commeitee. He always tell me what is going on rabbi search story. Then I met two rabbi who really wants have job. One of them is sketchy because his eyes don't match his words. (and he just used facebook to campiagn my conregation in my shul to spread his name. that is sketchy because he wants to be rabbi and it means he should be act like he is rabbi but instead tried to be equal to everybody to get job that's stetchy By the way, adults in my shul don't use facebook.)
You want to know the real working definition of "sketchy"?
Sketchy - actions/attitude of one person in relation to another similiar to those of an orthodox single during the week leading up to their engagement.

shoe stores in the heights that don't ever seem to have any customers yet have been in business for years seem sketchy to me...
and for the recored "sketchy" probably derives from either the Dutch "schets" or the German "skitze or skize", but can also be traced to several other languages including French, Spanish, Latin and Greek. The origin words generally mean done off hand or extemporaneously, and eventually came to mean unsubstantial. From there the word took the jump to mean imperfect in nature as in "there is something just not quite right about him". Even more interesting is that in the early 20th century you would call someone "a sketch" using the word as a noun and not an adjective.
a bais yakov girl with an opinion... sketchy.
ReplyDeleteA man who tells you, "Don't worry about it, honey, I'll take care of it, you can trust me".

ReplyDeleteUnclear.
ReplyDeleteThe answers so far are pretty much what I expected, but not what first came to mind. As an artist-wannabe, "Sketchy" = most of my drawings.

ReplyDeleteIt wasn't just in the early 20th Century: Stern girls have brought it back with a vengeance; as in "He is SUCH a sketch."
And of course, don't forget the abbreviation "That's so sketch" (because the extra syllable is just too tedious).
Erachet - Sooo sketch. I don't know WHO in this thread would EVER do something like THAT.
ReplyDelete(Sorry, SJ, there's a reason some of us use small words. It's not because we're dumb - it's because we're LAZY. :) )
FFD - You need to start concentrating on medical school, I think.
Now now! This is a G-rated blog! Let's keep it safe for the children!
