A Grandmotherly Idea

From R' Yakov Horowitz:
Grandparents: Here is an idea. In response to my column on drinking and Purim, a woman contacted my wife yesterday and informed her that one week before Purim she mails each of her teenage grandchildren a $100- ‘Purim-gelt’ check made out to their name. Along with the check comes a contract with a code of responsible behavior for Purim. In order to cash the check, they must call her after Purim and inform her that they adhered to the terms of the contract. ……………… Looking to adopt a grandmother for your kids????

Best Wishes for Simchas Purim

  1. eeeehh. Doesn't suit me. This sounds like when parents say to their kids "Too bad you don't want to be a mitzvah boy. All you have to do is wash your hands for ha'motzi. Don't you want a mitvah note?" I dont like that kind of stuff. They have to want to do it.

Same for teens, they should want not to drink. They shoulden't need to be payed for it. Todays teens are spoiled enough. Now, they can just sucker grandparents and say "Ill be good if you pay me"

  2. For some people, a high is worth more than money, which is why they spend so much on their addictions.

The grandmother's idea works only for people in a narrow range, who are tempted by the wrong course but not committed to it. Once they're committed to it, codes of behavior don't register at all. They'd just as soon cash the check to buy alcohol or whatever.
