My impression is that math is like writing: you can practice and labor over it and get pretty good results, but it helps a heckuva lot if you have an inherent instinct. And like with writing, you develop that instinct with early and frequent exposure.
Sadly, the education I received neglected to teach me mathematical thinking until college.
