Excerpt:
“Mr. Speaker: We were granted our right to exist by the God of our fathers at the glimmer of the dawn of human civilization four thousand years ago. Hence, the Jewish people have an historic, eternal and inalienable right to exist in this land, Eretz Yisrael, the land of our forefathers. We need nobody’s recognition in asserting this inalienable right. And for this inalienable right, which has been sanctified in Jewish blood from generation to generation, we have paid a price unexampled in the annals of nations.”Read the whole thing.
I'm not sure. But it would nice if Olmert et al would have the same understanding...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful.
ReplyDeleteOhhhhhh! It's too bad nobody mentioned this before. GOD says that the Jews own Israel. That'll settle it. And to think, the world's been wasting so much energy on the problem.
ReplyDeleteYeah, and God told Bush to invade Iraq, and bin Laden to strike at the U.S., and Pat Robertson that 9/11 was punishment for gays and the ACLU. Leave your religion out of our politics, for all of our sakes.
Honestly, Ezzie, I'm surprised that you liked that post.
JA - Firstly, I think you missed the point of the post. Second, I loved it.
ReplyDeleteObviously one can take issue with the idea that God grants any rights - but that any people's rights need to be "recognized" for them to be valid is ridiculous.

ReplyDeleteI never made such a claim. I believe, for example, that all consenting adults should be allowed to marry the consenting adult of their choice, even though that right isn't "recognized" by many other Americans.
That, however, was the point Begin was addressing (and that Meryl Yourish was addressing) in the post.
ReplyDeleteI don't think all consenting adults should be allowed to marry the consenting adult of their choice, and doubt you do either. [Brother/sister, etc.]
I also think that the concept of marriage is exclusive to certain unions between a man and a woman. You want to talk about civil unions because of tax purposes, etc., you have a better case - but I can argue that one somewhat as well.
Didnt get a chance to read the post..but I have to wonder about the use of "our" when refering to a foriegn state, even if it is Israel
ReplyDeleteIt's not just about the foreign state. Read it all! :)
