What's With Those PANTS?!

My dad claims it was "in style" back then; my mom says they were pretty hideous. But overall, my parents looked kind of stylish... I guess. If you're living in the 70's. This is one of the best pictures of my parents that I've ever seen - captures the happiness of a recently engaged couple perfectly, and it's just... nice! Interestingly, my dad still laughs anytime there's a camera pointed at him instead of smiling, and my mom still smiles the very same way. My sister and her entire family are ridiculously photogenic, and SIL has what her family calls a "Hilton" smile (after their dentist). I, however, cannot smile for a camera for the life of me - which is why I love taking pictures. You can't be in them when you're looking through the lens - or at the screen, whatever.

Just for comparison's sake, here's a picture of Serach & I [stolen from here... read some posts for entertainment*] from right after we were engaged in the freezing rain of Central Park. On video. With a fake homeless guy playing saxophone. But that's another story... for another time. Maybe I'll put up the video one day! Or, (more likely) maybe not.

* Sadly, many comments were deleted by OnlySimchas. My friends were quite funny, but OS didn't take too kindly to people pretending to work for them claiming that the post had exceeded capacity and was to be deleted... so they saved the space by deleting the commenters - including all their other comments - instead. Ah well. Can't blame them, only thank them for hosting such a wonderful service in the first place.

  1. Serach & me. "I" is the subjective form of the pronoun. The word in the sentence is the object of the prepositional phrase.

I'm so sorry. I tried to hold myself back, but this is one of my pet peeves! Once upon a time, the people inhabiting this world all used the objective form (me) and forced English teachers to preach the subjective form (I) with such emphasis that the objective form (me) has been lost whenever it is needed in conjunction with another noun. Ah, it's just so hard to explain. I'm getting all choked up just talking about it!

    Btw, nice pics.

  2. Ayelet - Wow. Never mess with English majors. No wonder you and SIL get along so well!

GT - That's one of the few I actually look normal in... I overthink as well. That's another reason I'm such a fan of candid shots.

  4. Don't think that your children won't make fun of your taste in clothing the same way you make fun of your dad's. The same way mine are making fun of mine.

  5. Irina - Heh. I don't think so, though I see now why people say so. We have similar smiles and heads, though his nose is much more Jewish ( :P Dad!) than mine. :)

PT - LOL. Ah, that's why I don't dress trendy. I'm too boring to get made fun of too much... I hope. Then again, I make fun of my own clothes from years past, so I guess you have a point.

  7. PT,

Just admit that you have a pair of pants that look just like those, I know that I do. Fortunately I can blame my parents for that. ;)

  8. Ezzie- nope. Not an English major. Just a majorly anal grammar geek. (My poor, poor husband...)

  9. Such great pictures! Your parents are adorable.

My father never wore plaid pants, but my grandfather had a pair just like that, only purple!

  10. My sister and her entire family are ridiculously photogenic

That is an understatement; her kids are the cutest in town. (Aviva, are you reading this?) ;)

  11. Ezzie,

Thos pants are fab but you must wear them with white loafers.

BTW, I have a matching scotch tape dispenser if your Dad is interested.

  12. I think I once heard that my dad wore an olive green suit to his wedding... man, the 70s were weird.

  13. Just to clarify...
Dr. Hilton is the orthodontist. Without him, it would be a Beaver Smile.

  15. Well, someday we shall look back upon our own photos from today, and we will laugh. 30 years can make the most modern thing today look ridiculously old and silly.

  16. Ezzie: As bad as you think your dad's pants looked, my parents dressed me in a white suit to a charedi wedding.

    That was humiliating.
