The post is referring to the everything: From the war to the building of Iraq to stabilization, etc. If you're trying to argue that Rumsfeld or Cheney were referring to anything more than the original combat, that is patently ridiculous. Did anyone believe that the rebuilding of Iraq would take 5 weeks - 5 months?! You've got to be kidding.

As for Wolfowitz's quote, I've already agreed that this was a mistake - there's a difference between defeating the armed forces of a country and providing the full day-to-day stability of one, and clearly the US underestimated the latter.Ezziehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12494592434522239195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13326001.post-1169962945142479712007-01-28T00:42:00.000-05:002007-01-28T00:42:00.000-05:00People seem to forget that before all of this star...People seem to forget that before all of this started, everyone was told very clearly "This is going to take a long time - years and years, possibly over a decade or more."

We've clashed on this before, but you're sticking with it, huh? The first time you could have been mistaken, but repeating it is more like lying, Ezzie. Debate the merits of the war, but don't rewrite history. I think you should post a retraction of this statement which you've used now several times.

Rumsfeld, 2002, CNN: "I can't tell you if the use of force in Iraq today will last five days, five weeks or five months, but it won't last any longer than that"

Cheney, 2003, Meet the Press: "My belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators. . . . I think it will go relatively quickly, . . . [in] weeks rather than months."

Wolfowitz, 2003, testifying in the House: "It's hard to conceive that it would take more forces to provide stability in post-Saddam Iraq than it would take to conduct the war itself and to secure the surrender of Saddam’s security forces and his army. Hard to imagine."

There are basically two options here. Either the administration had no idea what they were getting into or they were lying to Congress and the people. Neither one is inspiring.Jewish Atheisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04616617537150446818noreply@blogger.com
